I have said for many years that I must spend more time by myself for relaxation and meditation. Helen and I lead such a hectic lifestyle and always in a rush (like everyone else eh?) that we forget to take time out for ourselves.
Dont get me wrong I do fun things to relax but I never take time out to just meditate or sit still and do nothing. I read in a book over xmas that we should try and sit and do nothing for 20 - 30 minutes per day, by nothing they mean no music on, no tv, no distractions at all. Just sit in silence with yourself. It says you will feel much better afterwards, enlightened thoughts, solutions to problems or situations that have been bugging you will suddenly become clear with practice. I dont do this at the moment because I feel like I don't have the time. Sound familiar in your own lives?
So, my 2009 new year resolution is to spend more time with relaxation and meditation. To make this happen I have bought a large 30cm church candle to burn each day while I'm meditating and relaxing. I intend to spend a minimum of 20 mins by myself with only myself. I think I'm going to like it.
The picture of my candle shows 1 hour of relaxation so far and as you can see its only burned a penny sized whole in the top so it should last me a long time! I'm going to put pencil markers down the side so I can keep track of time spent by myself.
If you decide to follow this course of action let me know how you get on. So far.... I like it.
